Herona Community Hospital Hosts Ministry of Health Experts to Strengthen TB Diagnosis Under Global Fund Program

Herona Community Hospital continues to take bold steps in advancing healthcare delivery after successfully hosting a team of experts from the Ministry of Health Uganda to support the installation and training of a near point-of-care (NPOC) diagnostic machine under the Global Fund TB project funded by the United States Government.

The expert team was led by Mr Kagwa Charles, RTLP and EQA Focal Person at the Ministry of Health, whose leadership and technical guidance ensured a successful and impactful engagement.

Strengthening TB Screening and Diagnosis

Tuberculosis remains a major public health concern in Uganda, and timely diagnosis is critical in controlling its spread. The installation of the NPOC machine at Herona Community Hospital marks a significant milestone in enhancing rapid and decentralized TB diagnostic services.

With this advanced equipment, the hospital is now better positioned to:

  • Provide faster and more accurate TB testing
  • Improve early detection and timely treatment initiation
  • Expand access to diagnostic services within the community
  • Reduce delays and patient referrals to distant facilities

Capacity Building and Skills Transfer

A key highlight of the visit was the hands-on training provided to the Herona laboratory and clinical teams. The Ministry of Health experts conducted practical sessions on:

  • Operation and maintenance of the NPOC machine
  • Quality assurance and control procedures
  • Proper sample handling and reporting systems

This capacity-building effort ensures sustainability and empowers our staff to deliver high-quality diagnostic services with confidence.

A Collaborative Effort for Better Health

This initiative reflects the strong collaboration between Herona Community Hospital, the Ministry of Health, and global partners through the Global Fund program. With support from the United States Government, such investments are transforming healthcare delivery at the community level.

Looking Ahead

The successful installation and training mark the beginning of a new chapter in TB care at Herona Community Hospital. We are committed to utilizing this technology to its fullest potential in the fight against tuberculosis and improving patient outcomes.

Our Appreciation

We extend our sincere gratitude to the Ministry of Health team, led by Mr Kagwa Charles, for their dedication, expertise, and continued support. We also appreciate the Global Fund and the United States Government for their investment in strengthening Uganda’s health system.

Together, we are bringing life-saving TB diagnosis closer to the community and building a healthier future for all.
