Herona Community Hospital Trains Kyikyusa Holy Cross Hospital in Local Production of Hernia Surgical Mesh

Herona Community Hospital Kisoga continues to lead in innovation and capacity building in surgical care, as it successfully hosted and trained a team from Kyikyusa Holy Cross Hospital on the local production of hernia surgical mesh. This impactful initiative is part of a project supported by the Rotary Global Grant, aimed at strengthening surgical services in resource-limited settings.

Building Local Capacity for Sustainable Surgery

Hernia remains one of the most common surgical conditions in Uganda, yet access to affordable surgical materials continues to be a challenge for many health facilities. In response, Herona Community Hospital has embraced innovative solutions by training partner institutions on how to locally produce safe, effective, and affordable hernia surgical mesh.

The training brought together healthcare professionals from Kyikyusa Holy Cross Hospital, equipping them with practical skills and knowledge to produce mesh using locally available materials while maintaining high safety and quality standards.

Support from Rotary Global Grant

This initiative was made possible through the generous support of the Rotary Global Grant, which continues to play a crucial role in strengthening healthcare systems through capacity building, equipment provision, and skills transfer.

As part of the project, essential surgical equipment was delivered to support the program, including:

  • Hernia surgical sets to enhance operative capacity
  • An Eschmann SB3000 operating table, improving surgical precision and patient safety

These resources will significantly boost the ability of Kyikyusa Holy Cross Hospital to conduct safe and effective hernia surgeries.

Hands-On Training and Knowledge Exchange

The training sessions at Herona Community Hospital were highly interactive and practical, allowing participants to engage directly in the process of mesh preparation, sterilization, and application. The program also emphasized infection prevention, surgical safety protocols, and best practices in hernia repair techniques.

This knowledge exchange not only empowers healthcare workers but also ensures that patients in underserved communities can access life-changing surgeries at a reduced cost.

Transforming Lives Through Innovation

By promoting local production of hernia surgical mesh, Herona Community Hospital is addressing a critical gap in surgical care while advancing sustainable healthcare solutions. This approach reduces dependency on expensive imported materials and increases the number of patients who can benefit from timely surgical interventions.

Appreciation and Future Outlook

Herona Community Hospital extends its sincere appreciation to Rotary Global Grant for their invaluable support and to Kyikyusa Holy Cross Hospital for their commitment to improving surgical care.

The hospital remains dedicated to expanding such training programs to other institutions across Uganda and beyond, fostering a network of skilled professionals equipped to deliver high-quality, affordable surgical services.

Together, we are building a future where safe surgery is accessible to all.
