
Herona Community Hospital Welcomes Official Visit from Dr. Isha from the Office of Commissioner Dr. Mugahi – Ministry of Health
Herona Community Hospital was privileged to host Dr. Isha, representing the Office of the Commissioner, Dr. Mugahi, from the Ministry of Health, during an official visit focused on assessing newborn care services and guiding the facility on areas for improvement.
The visit included a tour of the maternity ward, neonatal corner, delivery rooms, and key maternal and child health service points. Dr. Isha engaged directly with midwives, nurses, and the hospital leadership team, acknowledging their ongoing commitment to safe deliveries and the wellbeing of mothers and newborns.
Assessment of Newborn Care Services
During the assessment, Dr. Isha reviewed several critical components of newborn care, including:
- Newborn resuscitation readiness and equipment use
- Infection prevention and control practices
- Management of premature and low-birth-weight babies
- Daily monitoring and documentation of newborn vital signs
- Availability and functionality of essential newborn supplies
- Staff capacity and adherence to Ministry of Health guidelines
She commended the team for their dedication, teamwork, and the notable progress made in improving maternal and newborn outcomes at the community level.
Recommendations for Strengthening Care
To further enhance the quality of newborn services, Dr. Isha provided practical, actionable recommendations:
- Strengthen continuous professional development for maternity and neonatal staff
- Improve stock management of essential newborn supplies and drugs
- Expand and reorganize newborn space to improve comfort and infection control
- Enhance referral coordination for critically ill babies
- Introduce more structured quality improvement activities and data reporting
- Plan for gradual upgrading of newborn equipment to meet growing service demands
