Dr. Mukalazi Henry Garvin Visits Kyabirwa Surgical Centre for Benchmarking and Collaboration

Dr. Mukalazi Henry Garvin, the Director of Herona Community Hospital, made a significant benchmarking and collaboration visit to Kyabirwa Surgical Centre, one of Uganda’s leading models of innovative and community-centered surgical care.

The visit aimed at strengthening ties between the two institutions while learning from Kyabirwa’s unique approach to delivering high-quality surgical services in a rural setting.

Upon arrival, Dr. Mukalazi was warmly received by the Kyabirwa Surgical Centre leadership team, who guided him through the facility’s state-of-the-art surgical theaters, patient flow systems, and technology-supported processes. He was particularly impressed by the centre’s efficiency, infection control standards, telemedicine integration, and the seamless teamwork practiced by the staff.

During the interactive sessions, Dr. Mukalazi had the opportunity to engage with surgeons, nurses, and administrative staff who shared insights on their model—focused on safety, innovation, and accessibility. Discussions touched on how similar strategies could be adapted to strengthen Herona Community Hospital’s surgical services, especially in areas such as minimally invasive procedures and community outreach.

Both institutions expressed a strong willingness to collaborate in the future. Proposed areas of partnership include:

  • Training and capacity building for Herona’s surgical and nursing teams
  • Knowledge exchange programs
  • Joint community surgical camps
  • Systems development to enhance patient safety and theatre management

Dr. Mukalazi appreciated the warm hospitality and openness of the Kyabirwa team, noting that the visit was both inspiring and transformative. He emphasized that Herona Community Hospital is committed to adopting world-class practices that improve patient care while remaining accessible to underserved communities.

The visit ended with a renewed spirit of partnership, hope, and shared vision—ushering in a new chapter of collaboration aimed at elevating surgical care in the region.
